Wanaka – Haast Pass – Franz Josef Glacier

Heute ist wieder ein Reisetag angesagt … es geht an die Westküste Neuseelands. Dazu müssen erst einmal die Südalpen überwunden werden. Es heißt hier gibt es eine massive Wetterscheide. Die Westseite der Südalpen ist extrem feucht und von Regenwald bedeckt.

Today is another travel day… to the west coast of New Zealand. To do this, the southern Alps must first be conquered. They say there’s a massive weather divide here. The western side of the Southern Alps is extremely humid and covered by rainforest.

Gemütlich Weihnachten feiern ist schon wieder vorbei, heute, am 25.12. geht es also weiter an die Westküste. Wir fahren durch den Mount Aspiring Nationalpark. Der Mount Aspiring ist auf einigen der Fotos von gestern zu sehen … sieht ein bisschen aus wie das Matterhorn. Je weiter wir uns von Wanaka entfernen, desto schlechter wird das Wetter. Gerade haben wir uns noch Gedanken darum gemacht, ob wir unser Auto, das inzwischen, von ein paar Stichfahrten abseits der Straße ziemlich eingestaubt ist, irgendwo waschen sollen, da fängt es auch schon an kräftig zu regnen. Und regnet und regnet und will gar nicht mehr aufhören. Am Lake Hawea entlang geht es noch einigermaßen, aber auf der restlichen Strecke ist ans Fotografieren nicht zu denken. Alle Lookouts sind in diesiges Nichts eingehüllt, von den Bergen ist kaum etwas zu sehen. Sehr schade. Die Fahrt sollte eigentlich einige landschaftliche Highlights bieten.

Die Landschaft ändert sich in der Tat deutlich. Wir fahren durch dichte Wälder mit Farnen, Palmen und dichtem Baumbestand. Übrigens, ich habe mich endlich aufgerafft und fahre tatsächlich heute zum ersten Mal selbst ca. 180 km! Geht doch besser als ich dachte!

Wir kommen einiges früher in Franz Josef an als geplant. Da es noch immer in Strömen regnet, relaxen wir heute mal auf dem Zimmer und tun einfach gar nichts. Am Abend gibt es noch ein Weihnachtsmenü im Hotel, nicht ganz billig aber lecker … mit lila Blumenkohl 🙂

Ich bin gespannt, ob das mit unserem Heliflight morgen klappt, bei dem Wetter!

Cozy Christmas celebration is already over again, today, on the 25th of December we continue to the west coast. We drive through the Mount Aspiring National Park. The Mount Aspiring can be seen on some of yesterday’s photos…. looks a little bit like the Matterhorn. The further we move away from Wanaka, the worse the weather gets. Just when we were wondering whether we should wash our car, which is now quite dusty  from driving off the road, it starts to rain heavily. And it rains and rains and doesn’t want to stop. Along Lake Hawea it’s still a little way to go, but on the rest of the route there’s no way to take pictures. All lookouts are wrapped up in misty nothingness, there is hardly anything to be seen of the mountains. That’s too bad. The trip should offer some scenic highlights.

The landscape is indeed changing significantly. We drive through dense forests with ferns, palms and thick trees. By the way, I’ve finally taken heart and I’m actually driving about 180 km for the first time myself with left-hand driving! Works better than I thought!

We arrive in Franz Josef much earlier than planned. As it’s still raining, today we relax in the room and do nothing at all. In the evening there is a Christmas menu in the hotel, not quite cheap but delicious… with purple cauliflower: -)

I’m curious to see if this will work with our Heliflight tomorrow, in this weather!
