Am Morgen ist unser Gastgeber Philipp bereits unterwegs mit dem Quad, um irgendwo einen Zaun zu reparieren. Lustig wie die Menschen / Paare doch überall auf der Welt ähnlich ticken. Philipp ist der typisch bärbeisige Farmer, aus dem kaum ein Wort rauszukriegen ist, Mary dagegen ist lustig und sehr gesprächig. Beim gemütlichen Frühstück erfahren wir allerlei Episoden aus ihrem Leben als Farmerin und Mutter. Die Fahrt ins Nirgendwo hat sich gelohnt, denn so ein persönlicher Kontakt ist wirklich ein Geschenk.

In the morning Philipp is already on his way with the Quad to repair a fence somewhere. Funny how people / couples all over the world tick similarly. Philip is the typical farmer, little shy, difficult to get a word out of him, but Mary, on the other hand, is funny and very talkative. During the cozy breakfast we learn all kinds of episodes from her life as a farmer and mother. The trip to nowhere has been worthwhile, because such a personal contact is really a gift.

Vom Sekt am Vorabend schwirrt uns noch ein bisschen der Kopf, aber da hilft alles nichts, wir müssen uns aufraffen und weiter geht die Fahrt. Leider ist der Wettergott uns heute ausnahmsweise mal gar nicht wohlgesonnen, es ist trüb und regnerisch, die Vulkankegel verstecken sich zum Abschied hinter dichten Wolken. Während der gesamten Fahrt regnet es mal weniger, mal mehr.

From the sparkling wine the night before, our heads are still a little bit buzzing, but nothing helps, we have to get up and the journey continues. Unfortunately, for once the weather god is not well-disposed towards us today, it is cloudy and rainy, the volcanic cones hide behind thick clouds for farewell. Throughout the whole trip it rains sometimes less, sometimes more.

Am Tongariro kann man eigentlich nur eins machen – wandern. Also planen wir für den letzten Tag des Jahres eine ausgedehnte Wanderung entlang der Vulkanberge. Ich bin eigentlich keine begeisterte Wandererin. Mit wird schnell langweilig beim Wandern und körperliche Daueranstrengung kann ich auch nicht leiden.

At Tongariro you can only do one thing – hiking. So we are planning an extensive hike along the volcanic mountains for the last day of the year. I’m not really an enthusiastic hiker. I sometimes get bored with walking and I Don’t like physical exertion that much.

Den heutigen Tag verbringen wir gemütlich in Wellington. Die wichtigstens Highlights der Stadt sind alle fußläufig von unserem Hotel aus zu erreichen. Da gibt es die Einkaufsstraßen Lambton Quay und Willis Street, das Te Papa Museum, die Cable Car zum Aussichtspunkt mit Blick über die Stadt, das neuseeländische Parlament…
